New York Times: Pulling a More Diverse Group of Achievers Into the Advanced Placement Pool

Eventually, the Advanced Placement tests will be deemed discriminatory. The passing rate for African-American students and Hispanic students is dismal.

The article suggests that teachers will have to change their style; the old “sage on the stage” method is not appropriate for the newly diversified AP classes. Some schools offer lunch-time tutoring, after-school tutoring, and Saturday tutoring. Diversification is hard work. Simply enrolling the two forever-disadvantaged minorities into the AP classes in not sufficient; the schools have to drag them to the finish line.
